Celebrating 175 Years
of Academic Excellence

Green Mountain College’s history goes back to 1834, when the Troy Conference of the Methodist Church decided to establish a strong and influential literary institution near the Conference’s geographical center. During the past 175 years, the College has grown from a single building to nearly two dozen on 155 acres of land that has been described as one of the most attractive small college campuses in the country.

It took generations of devoted and far-sighted individuals to successfully guide the College through nearly two centuries of challenges. Through it all, GMC has always demonstrated a pioneer spirit—it was the first Vermont college to grant baccalaureate degrees to women. In 1995, GMC adopted the environment as an organizing principle. Today, GMC is leading the wave of change on college campuses, enhancing our sense of responsibility for our environment, and helping to create a more sustainable society.
